What you need to know about the 2018 Topps Ronald Acuna Bat Down SP RC – Filthbomb Breaks

Boy the difference a few weeks can make in the sports card world.

2 weeks ago I was buying boxes of 2018 Topps Update for $80 at my local flea market and the guy was hugging me.  Today, I can’t even get a hug from my local dealer for $80.  No seriously. I tried. He said If I gave him another $50 he’d give me a hug and a box of Update. **Shrugs**

Anyways, with the prices of these Acuna Rookies skyrocketing over the past week or so, I wanted to take a moment to put this blog out to keep you from making a bad decision.

The chance of you pulling a BAT DOWN SP RC out of a box of 2018 Topps Update box is 0%.

If you buy a case, your chances slightly increase to 0% lol

Yes you read that correct. 0%. No, it’s not because you’re luck is as bad as mine…. it’s because the BAT DOWN is NOT in UPDATE!

The Acuna Bat Down SSP RC is ONLY in 2018 Topps Series 2.

They are severely short printed, and can only be found on average of 1 per case. This card shares base numbering with the much more common Ryan Sherriff card.

Now let’s do some simple math before you go diving head first into a case of Topps Series 2.

Case cost: The last series 2 case closed At $900 on Ebay.

Price of a PSA 10 BAT DOWN ACUNA SSP RC: $6-700

You do the math here. Is it worth it? HELLL NAW!

The real power move would be ponying up for 2-3 of these bad boys/girls and putting them away for a little bit to see how the market unfolds. If you’re wrong, you won’t get burned too bad…. if you’re right, $6-700 may look like a steal a few years from now.

NOW, am I running out and buying a 2018 Topps Bat Down Acuna? Probably not. I don’t see how this card could get much higher than it is right now.  The hype is unreal. Everyone is speculating like never before. Prices are NOW at where they SHOULD be down the road in my opinion.

Could I be wrong? Of course. Am I wrong? Probably not. (just kidding… or am I?)

So I still believe that there is value in buying some boxes of 2018 Topps Update.

A PSA 10 Update  Acuna RC just closed at $135 on the bay. A box is currently selling for $160-180.

Buying a box of 2018 Update gives you a shot at Acuna’s base rookie, some SP variations, as well as autographs and color.

A much safer bet in my opinion, with a lot more growth potential would be 2018 Update Acuna over 2018 Topps Series 2 Bat Down SSP Acuna.

Let the other guys buy into the hype on the bat down Acuna, while you sit back and strategically pick off the overlooked ones.

Cool article, but it sounds like it was written by an update (bats up) whale trying to bash the card they didnt stock up on.

So far I have seen 500 posts / pictures of people with their 100+ update acunas – not counting the ones already graded. The production run on it is ridiculous and now there’s a rush to flood the market with even more. Its obviously the far riskier over the bat down – which has far less numbers out there.

The production run of both are pretty high. What you need to remember is once people are priced out of one (bat down) they will eventually move to the next best thing…. Hence why I think the regular update is the right play here.
